- ============================================================================
- 1) WHAT HQ-FAX IS and is not
- ============================================================================
- One-Step High Quality FAX is intended to produce and transmit letter-quailty
- FAXes. It provides many value-adding features such as incorporating custom
- forms, thumb-tacking graphic images, and producing a variety of image formats.
- HQ-FAX does not receive or process received FAXes. If you are looking for
- software to process received FAXes, look for One-Step FAXHAVEN where you found
- HQ-FAX. Or look for our World Wide Web page @ http://www.execpc.com/~htfcons.
-
- ============================================================================
- 2) INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
- ============================================================================
- As you are reading this Readme file, it is assumed that you have trans-
- ferred the complete umcompressed HQ-FAX package to a diskette. It is NOT
- necessary to do so. If you have downloaded the HQFAX.zip file and unzipped
- it into a temporary directory, the installation procedure works ok.
-
- A) Mount the installation diskette into drive A: or B:
-
- B) Enter A: or B: Make sure that the DOS prompt changes from
- C:> to A:>, or from C:> to B:>. This is very important!
-
- C) Enter "Install". If you wish the package to install itself on any
- directory other than C:\HQFAX, enter the pathname in the Install command.
- Example (1): "Install D:\Hqfax",
- Example (2): "Install C:\Doc2fax"
-
- Now you can watch HQ-FAX install itself. It will only take a minute.
- This install procedure will NOT update your Autoexec.bat file. It will
- place a customized "Hqfax.bat" file in the root directory, drive C:, so
- that it will change to the C:\HQFAX directory (or the directory that
- you specified) before executing the HQ-FAX procedure.
-
- ============================================================================
- 3) FIRST TIME USE (HQ-FAX orientation procedure, a simple tutorial)
- ============================================================================
- We strongly recommend to new users of HQ-FAX that the following procedure be
- followed to get acquainted with the product. It is assumed that you have a
- functioning FAX modem when you are ready to excercise HQ-FAX. If not, you may
- follow these instructions to get the feel of HQ-FAX, but you will not be able
- to examine the FAXed output.
-
- A) Print out the files "HQFAX.hlp" and "Readme.hqf" if you have not already
- done so and have them handy.
-
- B) Have ready the phone number of a FAX station to send a FAX to.
- You will wish to examine the FAX(es) that you send.
- 1) Enter "HQFAX" at the DOS prompt.
- 2) Use the <TAB> key to position the cursor to the Phone(Send-to) field.
- 3) Enter a phone number of a FAX machine into the Phone field.
- 4) Enter <F10>. This will save the phone number which you entered.
- 5) Enter <F2>. This will convert and send the sample file "HQFDEMO1.ecl"
- to the FAX station.
-
- C) Next, let's FAX a cover sheet with the document.
- 1) Enter "HQFAX" at the DOS prompt.
- 2) Enter <F7>. The cover sheet screen will appear.
- Use the <TAB> key to position the cursor from field to field.
- Fill in the correct cover sheet information for your needs.
- Enter a quick note to a friend at the FAX station you will send to.
- 3) Enter <F10>. This will save your current cover sheet for later use.
- (In the future you will wish to remove the text "[FILE]htfclogo" from
- the top of this screen, & the text "[X]JHancock" from the bottom).
- 4) Enter <F2>. This will exit the Cover sheet screen & return you to HQFAX.
- 5) Enter <F2> again. HQFAX will convert and send the cover sheet & the file
- "HQFDEMO1.ecl" to the FAX station.
-
- D) Next, let's FAX a cover sheet without a document.
- 1) Enter "HQFAX" at the DOS prompt.
- 2) Enter <F7>. The cover sheet screen will appear.
- Use the information which you have previously typed in.
- Remove the text "[FILE]htfclogo" from the top of this screen, and the
- text "[X]JHancock" from the bottom of this screen. This will remove
- the graphic logo and signature from the FAXed output.
- 3) Enter <F10>. This will save your current cover sheet for later use.
- 4) Enter <F2>. This will exit the Cover sheet screen and return you to HQFAX.
- 5) Use the <TAB> key to position the cursor to the File field.
- Use the <spacebar> to blank out the name in the file field *AND* the
- file extension *AND* the OUTPUT to field.
- Make sure that there is nothing but spaces in these fields.
- This causes HQ-FAX to send just a cover sheet.
- 6) Enter <F2> again. HQFAX will convert and send the cover sheet which you
- have set up to the FAX station.
-
- E) Next, let's FAX a simple ASCII file. How about "C:\autoexec.bat".
- 1) Enter "HQFAX".
- 2) Put the file name "C:\Autoexec" in the input-file-field, with the file
- extension "bat" in the field which currently has "ECL" in it.
- 2) Enter <F2> as before. HQFAX will convert and send the file
- "C:\autoexec.bat" to the FAX station.
-
- F) Next, let's FAX a Print-Capture.
- 1) Enter "HQFAX" at the DOS prompt.
- 2) <TAB> to the INPUT-from-LPTx field. Enter a '1'.
- 3) Enter <F2>. This will set up a print-capture within HQFAX.
- 4) Enter <ESC> to exit HQFAX. Print-capture is now active.
- The simplest print-capture to try is to use the DOS print command to
- print an ASCII file, for example "C:\autoexec.bat".
- 4) At the DOS prompt enter: "Print C:\autoexec.bat".
- When the print-capture completes, you must enter "FAXIT" to FAX the
- file. HQFAX will then convert and send the file "C:\LPT1FILE.ecl".
- 5) You may also do a print-capture of the DOS print-screen function, which
- is invoked by the Print-scrn key on your keyboard. Follow the
- instructions above, replacing the DOS print command with pressing the
- <Print-scrn> key.
-
- G) Next, let's produce a document in Epson-LQ format and FAX it.
- !!ATTENTION!! !!ATTENTION!! !!ATTENTION!! !!ATTENTION!!
- HQ-FAX now provides a PCL (HP-Laserjet) interface. To use this interface,
- follow the instructions below, but name your print-to-disk files with a
- "PCL" file extension, and use an HP-Laserjet or PCL4 printer driver.
- If you wish to use the Epson Control Language interface, name your
- print-to-disk files with the "ECL" file extension.
-
- You must tell your word processor that you have an Epson-LQ 510 or
- similar printer. You do *NOT* need to have this printer. HQ-FAX will be
- this printer.
- 1) Enter "HQFAX" at the DOS prompt. You may do this from inside your word
- processor if it has a means of entering DOS commands.
- 2) <TAB> to the INPUT-from-LPTx field and enter a '1' as before.
- 3) Enter <F2>. This will set up a print-capture within HQFAX.
- 4) Enter <ESC>ape to exit HQFAX.
- 5) From within your word processor print a short document to an Epson-LQ
- printer. This will be print-captured by HQ-FAX.
- When printing is complete, get to a DOS prompt and enter "FAXIT" as before.
-
- H) Next, let's produce a print-to-disk file in Epson format and FAX it.
- Doing a print-to-disk is easy, but setting it up for the first time may
- be a challenge. How to produce print-to-disk files varies from one
- word processor to another. Please study the documentation in the
- section "Producing Epson Print Files" below file for more information.
-
- Give the print-to-disk file a file extension of ".ECL".
- Name the print-to-disk file something like "Mydoc.ecl".
- 1) Enter "HQFAX" at the DOS prompt.
- 2) Erase the '1' in '2' or '3'. in the LPTx field.
- Enter the name of your print-to-disk file in the file field, with
- the extension "ECL" in the next field.
- 3) Enter <F2>. This will convert and send your print-to-disk file to that
- FAX station.
-
- I) Take some time to study the file "HQFAX.hlp" to learn more about HQ-FAX'es
- many features. Give some thought to which ones are most useful to you.
-
- J) IF you have gotten this far without too much difficulty, It's time to
- register HQ-FAX.
- 1) Enter "HQFAX" at the DOS prompt.
- 2) Enter <F8>. The registration and order form screen will appear.
- Fill in your name, address and payment information, as well as which
- product you are registering, and what diskette size you require.
- 3) Enter <F3>. This will verify your input and total your payment.
- You may make a hard copy of this screen if you desire.
- 4) Enter <F8> again. The registration form will be FAXed to HTF Consulting.
- You will then receive your registration materials shortly.
-
- ============================================================================
- 4) Printing to Disk
- ============================================================================
- Some users may be new to the concept of printing to disk. This is simply
- a special print operation where the output is re-directed from LPT1 to
- a disk file. The resultant file is byte-for-byte the same stream of data
- which would have gone to the printer. Every major Word Processor has the
- ability to re-direct printer output to a disk file of the user's choosing.
- The details of how to perform this operation vary with each Word Processor.
- See the following section for more information.
-
- HTF Consulting recommends the print-to-disk method for providing input to a
- FAX utility. There are several reasons for this.
- A) "Print-Capture" TSRs are very limited in what they can do becuase
- they are working with a very finite amount of memory. It is difficult
- at best to incorporate graphics or work with a variety of fonts.
- B) When something goes wrong with a print-capture or a FAX transmission,
- the whole printing and FAXing procedure must be started over. Once
- you have printed to disk, it's done. You can retry the FAX transmission
- if necessary.
- C) Problems with print-captures are difficult to diagnose. It is much
- easier to diagnose errors associated with reading a disk file.
- D) The input data stream for the FAX application is recorded permanently,
- and may be re-used.
- E) Converting to FAX and then FAXing what has already been printed is more
- natural than setting up a FAX transmission and then printing from a Word
- Processor.
-
- ============================================================================
- 5) Producing Epson Print Files
- ============================================================================
- This section provides detailed instructions for producing Epson Print files of
- your documents from your word processor. These files are the input files that
- HQFAX uses to produce the FAX-ready, letter-quality images of your documents.
- You do not need an EPSON printer, but you must be able to print to a disk file
- as if it were an EPSON printer. You must do this without upsetting the print
- driver which you have installed for your real printer.
-
- If your Word Processor produces graphics integrated with text, it may want to
- know what graphics resolution you wish to send to the EPSON-LQ printer. The
- correct choice for HQ-FAX is 180 X 180 d.p.i. This is the resolution closest
- to the Group-3 FAX resolution of 200 X 200 d.p.i. HQ-FAX will do a credible
- job of translating higher resolution images, (thanks to the infinite patience
- of Richard Harper of the Association of Shareware Professionals), but the
- results will be at best no better than if you choose 180 X 180 d.p.i. Also it
- will be more work for your word processor and HQ-FAX.
-
- If you use any of the following word processors; 1) WordPerfect, 2) MS-Word,
- 3) MS-Works, 4) WordStar, 5) GeoWorks, or 6) any Windows application, see the
- specific sub-section for your application. If you use another word processor
- or spreadsheet package, proceed with the instructions that follow.
-
-
- PRODUCING EPSON PRINT FILES FROM ANY STANDARD APPLICATION PACKAGE.
-
- If you are using a spreadsheet package or a word processor other than those
- listed above, do the following. Consult the reference manual for your
- specific application package for the details for performing these steps.
-
- 1) Install the printer driver which most closely matches the EPSON LQ
- or EPSON LQ-510.
-
- 2) Make the EPSON printer the active or current printer inside your
- application (word processor, spreadsheet or whatever).
-
- 3) Study the documentation for your application to learn how to insert
- custom print controls into your document. This will only be necessary to
- use the custom print controls documented in the section Epson Cus-
- tom Print Controls.
-
- 4) Use the print command in your application to print to a disk file.
- The disk file MUST have the ".ECL" file extension, and it must be
- stored in a directory such as C:\hqfax or the directory of your
- word processor.
-
- 5) Run the HQFAX command, identify the ECL file that you wish to
- convert, and enter the other conversion parameters as well.
-
-

-
-
- PRODUCING EPSON PRINT FILES FROM GEOWORKS
-
- As of the time of this writing, the documentation for GeoWorks is not ready.
- By the time you read this paragraph, this documentation should certainly be
- ready. This documentation is being submitted by a satisfied user of HQ-FAX
- who runs his applications on GeoWorks 2.1. Please contact HTF Consulting and
- we will be happy to E-mail the GeoWorks documentation.
-
-
- PRODUCING EPSON PRINT FILES FROM WINDOWS APPLICATIONS
-
- To use HQFAX with any Windows application, you must select an EPSON 24-pin
- Letter-Quality printer (LQ-500 or similar model) as your active printer and
- select "On File" as the output device. Here's how.
-
- 1) From the Program Manager Panel, activate (double-click on) Main.
-
- 2) From Main, activate (double-click on) Control Panel.
-
- 3) From Control Panel, activate Printers.
-
- 4) From the list of available printers in the pull-down menu, select
- an EPSON-LQ.
-
- 5) From the Printer pull-down menu, select Printer Setup.
-
- 6) Click on the Connect button. From the pull-down menu of output devices,
- choose "On File". This will redirect Epson-LQ printer output to a disk
- file which you will name when you are ready to print the document.
-
- 7) Inside the Printer Setup panel, make sure that this is the active
- printer.
-
- Your Epson 24 pin printer is now active and you can print your document using
- the Print option of the File pull-down menu. When you select the print
- option, Windows will prompt you for an output file name. Enter a filename with
- the ".ECL" file extension so that HQFAX can find it. Now you are ready to
- convert and FAX the document. You need not exit Windows! Simply exit your
- word processor, go to the Program Manager window and click on the DOS prompt.
- You can run HQFAX to convert and send your document from the DOS prompt within
- Windows.
-
- There apparently is no capability within MS-Windows to customize your Epson
- printer driver. This means that the custom print controls documented in the
- following section will not be available to you. You will not be able to
- produce over-sized characters with the Windows printer driver. If you wish to
- make use of the Over-sized characters, you must install the EPSON-LQ printer
- driver provided with your word processor if available. You will need to
- customize it by adding the Special Print Controls listed below. Consult the
- user manual for your word processor for specific information about creating
- Custom Print Controls.
-
-
- USING VARIOUS TYPE SIZES
-
- The fancier EPSON-LQ printers provide for a range of type sizes from 8 points
- to 32 points. HQ-FAX faithfully interprets the EPSON-LQ printer commands
- which alter the pitch and point-size of the characters to be printed
- (or FAXed). If you have a print driver with your word processor for an EPSON
- ESC/P2 printer, you will be able produce the range of type sizes mentioned
- above, directly from your word processor.
-
- The EPSON ESC/P2 printers are: ActionPrinter 5000, LQ-570, LQ-870, LQ-1070 and
- LQ-1170. IF you do not have a print driver available for one of the above
- listed printers, you will appreciate the following.
-
-
- EPSON CUSTOM PRINT CONTROLS
-
- HQ-FAX offers a few Custom Print Controls to enhance the FAX images. The
- specifics of producing these Custom Print Controls within documents varies
- from one word processor to another. Please see the section Producing Epson
- Print Files for information regarding having your word processor produce
- Custom Print Controls that work together properly with HQ-FAX.
-
-
- The Custom Print Controls offered by HQFAX are:
-
- <Cntl>E (hex 05) This control code indicates Double-size characters to
- HQFAX. It is a toggle switch, meaning that the first occurrence of
- <Cntl>E turns on Oversize and the next occurrence turns it off.
-
- <Cntl>F (hex 06) This control code indicates Triple size characters to
- HQFAX. It is a toggle switch as well. The first occurrence of <Cntl>F
- turns on Triple-size, the next turns it off.
-
- <Cntl>G (hex 07) This control code indicates ~Quad~ sized characters to
- HQFAX. It too is a toggle switch, The first occurrence of <Cntl>G turns
- on Quad-size, the next turns it off.
-
- <Cntl>Q (hex 11) This control code indicates Double-Height characters to HQFAX.
- It too is toggle switch, meaning that the first occurrence of <Cntl>Q
- turns on Double-Height,the next turns it off.
-
- <Cntl>W (hex 17) This control code indicates Double-Wide characters to
- HQFAX. It too is a toggle switch. The first occurrence of <Cntl>^W
- turns on Double-wide, the next turns it off.
-
- When using these features, the user must account for the fact that the
- over-sized characters are taller and/or wider than normal characters, and
- format the page accordingly. When your word processor puts a page number or
- footnote at the bottom of a page, HQFAX will do the courtesy of removing
- whitespace near the bottom of the page in order to make room for the page
- number or footnote.
-
- =============================================================================
- 6) DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE
- =============================================================================
- Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before buying.
- If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you are expected to
- register. Individual programs differ on details, some request registration
- while others require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
- registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue using the
- software to an updated program with printed manual.
-
- Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and the
- copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions as
- stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just like
- commercial authors, and the programs are of comparable quality.
- (In both cases, there are good programs and bad ones)! The main difference
- is in the method of distribution. The author specifically grants the right
- to copy and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
- specific group. For example, some authors require written permission
- before a commercial disk vendor may copy their Shareware.
-
- Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You should
- find software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's commer-
- cial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting your needs easier,
- because you can try before you buy. And because the overhead is low,
- prices are low also. Shareware has the ultimate money-back guarantee --
- if you don't use the product, you don't pay for it.
-
- You must treat this software just like a book. An example is that this
- software may be used by any number of people and may be freely moved from
- one computer location to another, so long as there is no possibility of it
- being used at one location while it's being used at another. Just as a book
- cannot be read by two different persons at the same time.
-
- You are encouraged to pass a copy of HQ-FAX along to your friends for
- evaluation. Please encourage them to register their copy if they find that
- they can use it. All registered users will receive a copy of the latest
- version of the HQ-FAX product.
-
- Commercial users of HQ-FAX must register and pay for their copies of
- HQ-FAX within 30 days of first use or their license is withdrawn.
- Site-License arrangements may be made by contacting HTF Consulting at the
- address listed below.
-
- Anyone distributing HQ-FAX for any kind of remuneration must first contact
- HTF Consulting at the address below for authorization. This authorization
- will be automatically granted to distributors recognized by the (ASP) as
- adhering to its guidelines for shareware distributors, and such distributors
- may begin offering HQ-FAX immediately. However HTF Consulting must be
- advised so that the distributor can be kept up-to-date with the latest
- version of HQ-FAX).

- 7) ASP OMBUDSMAN STATEMENT
- =============================================================================
- The ASP Board has set up an office of Ombudsman and appointed an ASP member
- as Ombudsman. The Ombudsman's sole role is to mediate disputes between ASP
- members and their customers. The Ombudsman reports to the Board situations
- where he/she feels Board action or knowledge is appropriate.
-
- All ASP Members and Associate Members are required to cooperate with the
- Ombudsman when so requested. The following text is required by the ASP.
-
- [This program is produced by HTF Consulting, a member of the Association
- of Shareware Professionals (ASP). ASP wants to make sure that the shareware
- principle works for you. If you are unable to resolve a shareware-related
- problem with an ASP member by contacting the member directly, ASP may be
- able to help. The ASP Ombudsman can help you resolve a dispute or problem
- with an ASP member, but does not provide technical support for members'
- products. Please write to the ASP Ombudsman at 545 Grover Road, Muskegon,
- MI, 49442-9427 USA, FAX 616-788-2765 or send a CompuServe message via
- CompuServe Mail to ASP Ombudsman 70007,3536.]

- =============================================================================
- 8) DISCLAIMER - AGREEMENT
- ============================================================================
- Users of HQ-FAX must accept this disclaimer of warranty:
- "HQ-FAX is supplied as is. The author disclaims all warranties, expressed
- or implied, including, without limitation, the warranties of merchant-
- ability and of fitness for any purpose. The author assumes no liability for
- damages, direct or consequential, which may result from the use of HQ-FAX."
-
- ============================================================================
- 9) REGISTRATION INFORMATION
- ============================================================================
- HQ-FAX is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge to the user
- for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your friends, but please do
- not give HQ-FAX away altered or as part of another system. The essence of
- "user-supported" software is to provide personal computer users with
- quality software without high prices, and yet to provide incentive for
